Formed as a lockdown project by vocalist Tiger Nicholson and guitarist James Donovan, Bishopskin has grown into a South London collective whose performances are as spiritual as they are musical.
The current eight-piece lineup includes Hannah Hayden (violin), Ben Reinstein (drums), Luke Nankervis (keys), Lena Edgeley (bass), Joshua Collins (guitar), Finlay Banks (trumpet) and Eden Allen (vocals). Each member adds to the group’s distinctive blend of sacred energy and avant-garde experimentation.
Tiger describes the band’s music as “acoustosonic worship” and views each song as a kind of psalm, a broken man’s cry to God and Jesus of Nazareth. This spiritual foundation gives their work a striking sincerity that sets them apart in the London scene. Bishopskin’s songs are both lament and celebration, mixing English folk motifs with the energy of rock and the layered harmonies of gospel.
Their debut album Babble was praised by Clunk Magazine as “a stunning debut from a band that is as exciting as they are unique.” The Theme Sessions performance draws on that same blend of vulnerability and power. The set features the sweeping Ave Maria alongside the introspective Mother’s Steel Bike and the atmospheric Doggerland, showcasing the full range of the band’s emotional and musical palette. Nicholson’s gravelled voice moves between hymnal calm and prophetic intensity, surrounded by violin, trumpet and rich choral textures that build a sound both ancient and modern. Bishopskin steps into the frame for a live performance for Theme Sessions.
